Presidential Message, Independence Day 2008

President George W. Bush

I send greetings to all Americans on Independence Day.

More than two centuries ago, bold and courageous visionaries pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in signing the Declaration of Independence. Guided by ancient and eternal truths, our forefathers proclaimed to the world that liberty was the natural right of all mankind and in doing so began one of the greatest chapters in human history. On the Fourth of July, our country commemorates the great achievements of these heroes and reaffirms its unwavering confidence in the power of freedom.

It was the desire for freedom that inspired our Founding Fathers, and it is the belief in the universality of freedom that guides our Nation. On this occasion, we pay special tribute to the men and women of our Armed Forces, both past and present, who have answered freedom's call and defended the values that make America the greatest country on earth.

May God bless America.

American-Thai NFL Star Kevin Kaesviharn and his Family Visit Bangkok

Kevin Kaesviharn and Ambassador Eric G. John attended the annual American Flag Football Tournament.
To celebrate the 175th Anniversary of U.S. – Thai friendship, the U.S. Embassy hosted Kevin Kaesviharn, the Thai-American football safety with the New Orleans Saints, and his family during his recent visit to Bangkok, Thailand.  Kevin, who was accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and his Thai father, Khun Mongkol, spent three days (June 16, 17 and 20) meeting and greeting new friends and fans here in Bangkok.  First, Kevin and his family visited the Chaopraya Wittayakorn School, where they were welcomed by the school marching band and over 1,500 students waving Thai and American flags.  They also visited the Makasaan Phittaya school, where Kevin made a generous 100,000 baht donation to the school’s scholarship program, and later met with Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayothin.  On his last day in Bangkok, Kevin was joined by Ambassador Eric G. John and together they attended the annual American Flag Football Tournament.  Before the tournament started, Kevin conducted a short football clinic with several Thai youth teams.  Throughout his visit, Kevin emphasized to kids in his talks the importance of setting goals, believing in oneself and working hard.  Kevin also shared with his audience how happy he was to visit Thailand for the first time and to receive such a warm reception from the Thai people.

Condolence Statement by the Secretary Rice - June 24, 2008

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman

The attack in Sadr City that killed State Department employee Steven L. Farley, along with two civilian employees from DOD and two military personnel today, is a terrible reminder of the dangers that our colleagues face daily in advancing our critical foreign policy goals.

Steven Farley’s devotion to public service was reflected in his many years of duty in the United States Navy Reserve, and to his hometown of Guthrie, Oklahoma.  Farley was mobilized shortly after September 11th, and served with distinction on the staff of the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the western Pacific.  Along with thousands of other citizen-patriots, he volunteered to serve in Iraq, joining the State Department in April 2007.  He was one of the hundreds of dedicated men and women serving on Provincial Reconstruction Teams, helping the citizens of Iraq to rebuild and revitalize their local governments after years of Saddam’s tyranny.

Our heartfelt sympathy and gratitude go out to Steven Farley’s family and his wife Donna, and to the numerous men and women who worked alongside him in Iraq.  I have conveyed my sympathy to Ambassador Ryan Crocker; I salute the courage and commitment of all of our colleagues in Iraq.
