Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
The U.S. Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration in Thailand is represented by the DEA Narcotics Attaché of the DEA Bangkok Country Office. The Drug Enforcement Administration's stated mission is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States. It seeks to bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States or any other competent jurisdiction, organizations and the principal members of those organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture or distribution of controlled substances appearing in, or destined for illicit trafficking in, the United States. It also recommends and supports non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on both the domestic and international markets. In carrying out its mission, the DEA is designated as the lead agency responsible for the development of the U.S. Government's drug enforcement strategy, programs, planning and evaluations.
In Thailand, DEA is concerned with supporting the Royal Thai Government's counter narcotics efforts, while targeting drug trafficking organizations responsible for smuggling controlled substances into the United States and the international market. Further, the DEA Bangkok Country Office has regional drug-related responsibilities in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
