Peace Corps Thailand Swears in 54 New Volunteers Honoring 175 Years of U.S.-Thai Friendship
On April 2, Peace Corps Thailand swore in 54 new Peace Corps Volunteers in a ceremony presided over by Ambassador John and representativeds from the Royal Thai Government at the Royal River Hotel. More than 100 local Thai counterparts attended alongside their new Peace Corps colleagues and listened on as Ambassador John and Director General of the Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency Chitriya Pintong delivered remarks highlighting the role that the Peace Corps has played in building the enduring friendship shared between the United States and Thailand. Ambassador John reminded the audience that this year marks the 175th anniversary of this special relationship between the Kingdom of Thailand and the United States, and recalled that "Thailand was among the earliest countries to extend an invitation to the Peace Corps...An invitation that was accepted in 1962."
This new 54-member group of Peace Corps Volunteers -- the 120th to serve in Thailand since the Peace Corps arrived in January 1962 -- will join the group of 108 Peace Corps Volunteers already in Thailand working on a Teacher Collaboration and Community Outreach Project and a Community Based Organizational Development Project. The Volunteers are assigned to serve in projects throughout the country, ranging from Chiangrai to Trang and Nakorn Phanom to Kanchanaburi, and often live and work in small rural communities and smaller district towns.
